Jonathan has a scar on his left cheek. His daddy smacked him with a knife when he was nine. His right eye is glass. His daddy hit him so hard when he was eleven his eye popped out. His mama had to wait until his daddy passed out to take Jonathan to the hospital. She home-schooled him after that.

At fifteen, Jonathan killed his daddy the same night his daddy broke Jonathan’s arm. Finding work was hard.

The carnival doesn’t care. Jonathan can repair every ride, create promotion posters, and design electrical systems to keep everything running without interruption.

    if this had been billed a true story it would have been equally believable. Unfortunately, there are surely a lot of Jonathans out there. A great setup for a happy ending.

    Sounds like the old man got everything he deserved. And things seemed to work out well for Jonathan in the end. Really fine writing, Melanie.

    @Drew - thank you. I imagine Jonathan was fueled by anger. That, or a pistol only takes one hand.
    @Dr Abbler - much appreciated.
    @Neville - there are too many Jonathans, though sadly I can't say if they all do as well as he.

    @Christopher - The old man did, and Jonathan's alright now. Thank you kindly.
