I fought, even if I was weak.
The knives slashed, ripped me apart, drenched in blood and pain.
I tried to stand, to walk, but couldn't.
It was smoke. I could feel the heat.
I turned, and the fire approached me.
Like I was draped by flames, a dress to dread.
I would turn into ashes.
With a clasp on my breath, I clenched hope.
To spread my wings again and rise from the inferno like a Phoenix.
I could see lights and hear sirens, their shouts. They were near.
I woke up with a new face, a new name.

Beautifully written, although I'm still trying to work out the meaning.

So someone tried kill a person and she had enough resilience to get through the blaze. In time help from paramedics and stuff. Later, she had to undergo a whole surgery changing her identity. She can now avenge and seek justice.

Fabulous Verity! And thanks for the explanation. Love the ‘a dress to dread’ creates terrific mental images.
(If you have access to ‘Britbox’ there might be (I’m not too sure) a wonderful series called Witless - not witness - which imho is brilliant and involves a couple of silly young women who witness a killing and have to have changes of identity. It’s a comedy with a bit of killing thrown in for good measure and the performances are wonderful throughout. Three series in total, but the English humour might not translate so well🥴)

Witless isn't on BritBox, at least not here in the States. I'm in the middle of watching an old sci-fi series on BritBox called Blake's 7.

And Verity, my confusion about this drabble was no reflection on your writing, which is superb.

I guess someone uploaded Witless on dailymotion.

Thanks, Christopher! I'm glad even if you see it needs improvement!

There's no improvement needed in the drabble, just in my comprehension skills!

Witless, the BBC comedy in three series of 5 episodes each (not to be confused with Witless Protection, the US movie) seems to be available on Amazon Prime over here, although I haven’t checked it out yet.
