The truck was empty when the girls climbed in. The metal floor echoed
as they jumped up and down in their sneakers, giggling at the first jolt forward
when the wheels began to turn. The hopper showered canola seeds and wisps of stalk and dry leaf. They backed away from the spray, still giggling, stooping to fill their hands as it filled the space around their feet, climbed up their ankles, held their knees. They slowed as if in water. But there was dust. There was the deep rumble. They reached to each other, towards the metal ladder. To the air above.

A chilling tale - especially with the contrast of them giggling even as you know their fate...

Wonderful, yet horrific. Their innocent fun so well depicted and the tragedy foretold. Excellent drabble.

Senseless tragedies surround us. Sad for the family who lost three sisters.
When a field of canola is in bloom, it is bright yellow. Something to see. I wanted to begin with that image but had to scrap it. Thank you for your comments.

Such excitement, and such a tragic ending, all skillfully composed. Well done!
