The coffee cup was half empty with the coffee cold on the table with the newspaper half read. It was beginning to brighten after six when the woman
was found dead on her driveway by a neighbor scrapping his car windows
before going to work. She had slipped on some ice while taking out her recycling box. Despite the jostle, the box remained upright with a jar of coffee, soup tins, and yogurt containers.
She was an independent old woman, the neighbor told police. She lived alone and did for herself.
Inside her house, half done chores were left undone.
