Barbara exited the kitchen, pulled her pad from the pocket of her pinafore and asked, "What'll it be?"

The man pulled off his sunglasses and Barbara got a look at his eyes; blue with smoldering flecks of gray peppered throughout. He looked like he was staring through her skin and into her soul. It unnerved her.

"What'll it be, pal?" she asked again, trying to regain her composure.

"Black coffee. You got donuts?" he asked in a voice that sounded like echoes from the bottom of a canyon.

"Sure. We got donuts."

"Two."

Barbara nodded, reaching for the coffee pot...
