Requiem For A Stripper #163

by

Since it was Saturday night the place was packed. It was also smokier than the south side of Chicago on October 8, 1871. I went to the bar and sat down. This was the first chance I'd had to ask the bartender if he knew whether or not Honey Comb had received a note the night she disappeared.

When I asked, after ordering a bourbon on the rocks, he put the drink down in front of me and said, "I can't remember. You see how crowded it is in here?"

I supposed I wouldn't find the answer to that one...

For those across the pond, there was a great fire that spread through the south side of Chicago in 1871 that killed about 300 people and burned over three square miles of the city over 2 days.

More fine research, Christopher! When you mentioned Chicago south side, I thought you wuz talking about when Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis got filmed witnessing a massacre... but then I realised that wasn’t Valentine’s Day. But I started thinking about Marilyn Monroe anyway😍!

They call it the Great Chicago Fire and it was pretty famous. They used to say it was started by Mrs. O'Leary's cow knocking over an oil lamp in a barn or something like that. I don't know if that's since been debunked but that's what they used to say the origin of the fire was.
