She nodded, "The police are already involved. But you know how much attention they give to missing persons cases. It's not like a murderer running loose on the streets."
I did indeed know. I decided I'd look into it further. Jen Ann Tonic's looks nor her profession had anything to do with my decision. Well... maybe a little.
"My rates are 50 a day plus expenses, Jen. Is that acceptable?"
Her eyes opened a little wider when I said the number 50. Maybe strippers weren't being paid what they used to be.
"Well...I could probably manage a day or two."

I promise I hadn’t read forward before I wrote my comment on the last drabble!

Ha! I couldn't find much information about the rates detectives charged. Marlowe charged $25 a day plus expenses in 1939. But I think I had said $50 in one of the other stories so I just left it. If people didn't like it they could go out the same door that took them into his office!

Also, a lot of detectives in those stories would get a $200 or $300 retainer at the start of their cases. I never went that route with Jake.

Gosh, Christopher, you are so thorough!

I try to be. Some info is almost impossible to find, but I only take artistic license when absolutely necessary. All of the streets are real streets in and around L.A. and I try to map out how long it would've taken Jake to drive from one place to another.
