Bill had his fortune read by a gypsy at a party. She said he'd hit the jackpot and mentioned some numbers, one of which was his favorite, 17. He determined they were lottery numbers. He ran out to buy a ticket.
He crossed the street, getting halfway when he saw a taxi coming one way and a bus coming the other. He thought he could make it. He didn't.
The bus, number 17, was carrying a load of gamblers to the Jackpot Casino downtown.
The gypsy was wrong about one thing:
Bill didn't hit the jackpot; the Jackpot hit him.

Credit for the inspiration for this drabble goes to Brian Mackinney, who used the phrase "Number's up" in a recent drabble.

Great, if grisly! Well done to Brian for his inspirational phrase. Nice one Christopher. Worth staying up late to write!
