Sperry put his head in his hands. I could tell I was looking at a man who knew the score before the game started and still bet on the losing team.
"Look, Sperry," I said, "maybe it's not as bad as it looks. We'll get the information and pass it on to you and you can decide if it's a storm you can weather or not. But don't worry about it until you actually see it."
Sperry and Mason both stared at me. I wasn't sure why.

Thanks. I'd never heard it before either, but you see people like that all the time. Deep down they know the truth about someone but they pretend it's not true. But Jake often speaks in similes, metaphors and analogies so that's what I came up with for that particular situation.
