"Look," I told Max as we were driving, "you're going to need to stay in the car while I go in to see Gallagher."
Max shook his head, "No way...,"
"Listen to me, Max. You're the only trump card we have. Gallagher wants you. That's what this whole thing is about. What we're going to have to do is set up an exchange: you for Katie. Then we can work out how we're going to take Gallagher out and get her back."
"I don't like it," he said.
"I don't either," I replied, "but will you trust me?"

The subsequent scene I actually wrote with Max in it and I realized how tactically unsound it was for Jake to go in there with Max, because that's exactly what Gallagher wanted. So I rewrote the whole scene but I didn't want to back up too far so I just had Jake get Max to wait in the car. He shouldn't have gone with him at all but I would've had to rewrite way too much story to go back and change that.
So, he's waiting in the car.
