The Littlest Client #32

by

"You Ricky Rucksack?" I asked as I stood over him.

He was still gasping for breath, "Never heard of him!"

I grabbed one of the severed legs from his coffee table and swung it at his knee. I heard a crack and wasn't sure if it was his leg or the coffee table leg.

He screamed and grabbed at his knee, "What are you, some kind of lunatic?"

"That's right, Rucksack. A stark raving lunatic. Now, when was the last time you saw Max Dolan?"

"Who?" he yelled.

I grabbed another coffee table leg from the floor.

"Wait!" he screamed...

If this is what a dollar buys, then I need Jake’s phone number!

Haha! I don't know if you remember but in the very first story a woman who had amnesia came to Jake to help find out who she was and she was carrying a bowling ball bag with 250 thousand dollars in it. Long story short, at the end of the story she told Jake to keep that money. This is the first tale I've told of a mission after he got the money but before he gave up being a detective for a few years. So he really doesn't need the money. He just wants to help Katie. He mentions all that about the money later in this story.

Yes, I remember. I did wonder at the time about why he needed to continue being a gumshoe.

Well, that's revealed in this story too, about him needing that adrenaline rush. He'd eventually give it up for a while but the story about the Beatniks pulled him back into the game. They'd make more sense if I'd done them chronologically but I didn't intend to do another one after that first one, but I enjoyed it so much I kept going.

And we are so glad you did keep going. Did I tell you about a Raymond Chandler/Philip Marlowe writealike/tribute writer called Benjamin Black (real name John Banville, who lives in Dublin) ? His novel ‘The Black Eyed Blonde’ is pretty good, so there must be a market out there for Jake. I may have to read that book again as it’s difficult reading electronic copies of books while hard copies from the library are unavailable. I’ll read it alongside Jake though.

I don't recall hearing about him but I'll check it out.
