He carried on, "She said she wouldn't take a common name like mine when hers was established and well-respected. She actually had the nerve to suggest I change my last name to hers."

I tried to tread lightly here. "Meaning no disrespect, Mr. Alexander, but what the hell did she marry you for?"

"Beats me," he said. "I think she was lonely. And she needed an emotional punching bag."

I continued the pussyfooting, "And...I'm assuming you married her because she was well-off."

He grinned, "Exactly. But all the money in the world isn't worth what I'm going through."
