Bourbon On The Rocks #103

by

I was walking backward toward the car, holding my gun on Bobby Diamond. I knew if I turned around that coward would shoot me in the back. I reached the car, opened the door, jumped in and peeled out.

Milton had watched the whole scene from inside the car.

"You are so cool," Milton said as I tried to put as much distance between us and the Cherokee Club as I could.

"No, I'm not. I just made a mortal enemy of one of the most dangerous men on the West Coast. I'm not cool, Milton. I'm a friggin' idiot."

I actually checked to make sure that both "cool" and "friggin" were in the American lexicon as slang in 1949. They were.

Yep - Jake seems to have lost the plot. Cal’s not going to be too pleased either. Bob is off the hook for now and Milton needs both hands to hold his trousers up! But Jake’s too smart. Can’t wait to see the bigger plan.

It seems to be a recurring characteristic of Jake... making enemies of the most evil hombres on the planet. At some point, I’m guessing that ‘Grim’ has gotta come visiting one of them!

I think in Jake's mind his philosophy is "If someone hits you, you hit them back twice as hard," otherwise it shows weakness. That's my take on it, anyway.
