Taughtcha!

Memory Lane #3

After Radwinter’s recollections... on to delightful Saffron Walden, a lovely Essex market town that claimed my future bride for three years. We rediscovered her former teachers training college, a girls-only institution (also frequented by eager boys wanting to be taught a thing or two!). But most of us naughty boys obeyed class rules!

Having fallen for her when she was 16, I’m sure her parents intended this three year imprisonment to drive us and keep us apart. But occupied as she was there by lessons, my love for my favourite teacher simply didn’t lessen!

That sure taught her folks!

She’ll believe anything!

Memory Lane #2

Our trip home from Suffolk was proving a little slow, but packed full of memories, particularly for Mrs H.

From Steeple Bumpstead, we entered memories of long ago territory, driving on to Radwinter... to the school of my wife’s first teaching practice. Stopping outside the school, she couldn’t remember it! But she remembered one child, called ‘Loveday’. The 5yr old’s mum told Mrs H that the child was so named because she was born on a lovely day! A reasonable answer perhaps, but I had other ideas... love... day? Afternoon delight?

Mrs H said I must be wrong!

Oh yeah?

The Scenic Route

Memory Lane #1

With all the trunk roads out of Suffolk compromised by roadworks, we decided to go home the slower scenic route via pretty villages and towns.

The first gem was Long Melford - ancient, pretty and very long!

Next.... to pretty Clare - she wasn’t there!... so we sat in café watching through the window, trying to spot her!

Then onwards along narrow roads to Steeple Bumpstead. With such a strange name I decided to search for the steeple. I did see loads of country bumpsteads on the streets, but no sign of the steeple.

Then off down memory lane for Mrs H...
