Lincoln's father died just before Lincoln's thirteenth birthday.
It had been completely unexpected. His father was a fairly healthy man, his only detriments being several cavities and chronic bad breath.
So it was unfair when he was killed in a pileup on the highway as he was driving home from work.
Some muttered about it at his funeral. "What a tragedy," the guests murmured, shaking their heads as they observed Lincoln's attempt to stifle his tears as he watched his father's burial. A man struck down in his prime and a fractured family left behind; a truly unfortunate occurrence, indeed.
