If I’d done wrong when I was young,
And feared the wrath of my dear mum,
I’d just say “sorry” and askance she’d look,
T’would usually get me off the hook.

And if it happened time and again
My sorry strategy would start to strain
“You can’t be sorry every time!”
But saying sorry’s not such a crime.

“I’m sorry Mum, but I really am!”
I’d say without a trace of ham
“NEVER again!” I promised with guile
Which brought a hint of my mum’s smile.

(I apologise when the going gets tough
An apology, I find, is usually enough.)

I;ve been told I apologise too much. A very British thing I suppose,

My mum was always telling me I was saying sorry so much I couldn’t mean it. But I do find that a happy life is often achieved by being the first to apologise, even if I have nothing to apologise about. It’s a strategy for the long game and the issues are rarely remembered for long.
