When asked recently what I’d have done if I hadn’t gone into advertising, there was no hesitation.
“I’d have been a rockstar!”
I’d probably have started locally in the club me and my schoolmates frequented. The Orford Cellar. After all, if it was good enough for some of the most talented rockers, like John Mayall, Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker and Eric Clapton, it was a good enough place for me to kick off!
I just knew I could captivate an audience, be it 200 or 200,000. I had the guitar, I had all the moves.
All I lacked was talent!

The Orford Cellar... not just those mentioned above, but also Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Elton John, The Cream, Moody Blues, Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart... and the less well known but brilliant Graham Bond and Zoot Money along with terrific local bands. It wouldn’t pass health and safety these days.... but it was where I first saw my wife-to-be, gingerly negotiating the steep steps to the cellar... but I wouldn’t actually meet and speak to her for many months.

300 people crammed in somewhere fit for a hundred max every night... the best place to be would have been the stage... which is why I should have been a rockstar too!

Definitely worth visiting then. I wonder if the Nando’s which is there now is equally attractive? No I don’t!!!
