I visited our local hospital’s A&E Department. It was neither accident nor emergency - nothing serious. But I spent a pleasant (yes pleasant!) 5 hours there and in the special day emergency care unit (still no emergency!) The staff were lovely. I saw the doctor twice, first to check symptoms and second for the welcome all-clear.
She asked if I smoked.
”No!”
“How much alcohol per week?”
“Less than 14 units!”
“Keep below 14” she advised. “That’s the safe limit!
“For women!” I countered. “For men it’s really 21... but feminism demands equality!”
She smiled wryly. She knew I knew!

I was once shipped into Emergency to receive the inevitable questionnaire. The nurse was horrified at my alcoholic intake. When I was discharged she said, “Keep taking the tablets. Have a little drink and shave that bloody beard off. It’s doing you no favours at all.” I stopped drinking. For a while.
