Spare a thought for the poor rose. By any other name, would it smell as sweet, and present it’s special beauty to the world? To pollinators. To human beings. To me.
So why encourage you to spare a thought?
The life cycle of the rose involves bursting out into blooms in summer, specifically to attract pollinators on the wing. To be inseminated, producing the seeds to continue the species. And that’s it! Work done! But then out we go with our secateurs... dead-heading! So the rose will try again, and again, and again. Hey! That’s not fair! That’s bullying!😤

It wouldn't be worth the trouble if they weren't so beautiful.

Indeed, Christopher! We were both dead-heading roses yesterday and you have to get so close to them to do so that you almost commune with them! I thought I heard one tell me to stop pruning and give them a break! 🥀
