Summer 1986, Britain suffering Hurricane Charlie. Coincidentally, that year, three families decided to venture across the Channel to France on holiday.
We boarded the ferry for Cherbourg early. We had basic cabins. But where was Sophie? Had they missed the boat?
Then their red Volvo hurtled towards the ferry. Just in time! The last car! Parked across the ferry exit doors.
Arriving France early am, passengers in cars waiting... and waiting... then hooting horns.
Sophie and family had luxury cabins and were still pampering themselves in the shower; oblivious!
Other passengers were clearly angry. But we didn’t give a hoot!
