Today Mrs H and I decided to pootle up Frogmore Creek. We hopped into my little boat and the engine started on first pull of the starter cord. Unusual, as most times from a ‘cold’ start, it takes many pulls and an increasing level of anxiety. Today was different; first go! Excellent; bodes well!

We powered up to Frogmore, following the marker posts, keeping the red ones to port (LHS for landlubbers!). On our return though the engine conked out. More petrol? OK, sorted. But my temperamental outboard had other ideas!

Rescue came quickly. Our rescue boat was wonderful!

Result!

You definitely captured the feeling of trying to start a motor like that. Not to mention your arm feels like you've pitched nine innings in the World Series when you get one of those motors that just won't start!

The problem was... I had left my boat and engine at my son’s Devon house and asked him for a lift down there (he lives in London during the week) so I could arrange to get the engine serviced. He insisted that he would do it himself. But he’s a very, very busy guy... so this year it’s a service free engine😰. We’re taking engine and boat home tomorrow when we return. Not taking any chances again next year!

Indeed, Brian. Engine and boat now safely in our drive, after exhausting 7+ hour drive. I think I’ll leave it until tomorrow to clean the boat and run fresh water through the engine as I’m pretty knackered right now (and it’s rather dark!).

(Son nonetheless feeling pretty guilty... but it was no great problem... except up Frogmore Creek!)

This has almost made me want to go boating .And stirred some memories of a school trip to the Norfolk broads.
