McCartney was playing The Cavern in Liverpool, 2018. The Beeb was screening the recording. Mrs H had been a great fan of the Fab Four, still is... but until tonight she hadn’t twigged. Neither had I.

Macca played a mix of Beatles, Wings and personal hits. Then... the realisation... to us both... independently.

“She was just seventeen, you know what I mean...”

“That’s our song!” she announced, thinking this would be a revelation, but I’d had the same thought, simultaneously.

“So close... just change one word.”

”She was almost seventeen...

Only 16, but the rest was just how we met.

Nice. You know, Sam Cooke had a song called "Only Sixteen." I don't know if it was a hit over there, though.

Yes, I knew it well, and liked it very much too. It was covered over here, and was a hit alongside Sam Cooke’s original by a guy called Craig Douglas, of whom little was then heard after that. But ‘Only Sixteen’ had sad connotations, whereas ‘I saw her standing there’ was joyous, and we both still agree, it was almost an exact description of that most memorable and fortunate night that we met. (What an old softee I am!)
