We finally redeemed a most welcome birthday gift today. Luton Hoo was the venue, a grand mansion in a large park, over centuries having hosted, among others, kings James I, George III, Winston Churchill and our own dear Queen Elizabeth, on her honeymoon.

Lunch there today, despite masquerading as ‘afternoon tea’, was a feast! We sat under a large chandelier in one of the staterooms, enjoying ‘endless’ sandwiches, scones, cream and jam, and a plateful of cakes. ‘Endless’ was a challenge I couldn’t resist. An extra plateful of sandwiches was de rigeur!

I left nothing to chance; I left nothing!

Sounds like a quite a repast that you couldn't (re)pass up!

Indeed! It was really good and as I’d fed so well, I passed on eating anything more for the rest of yesterday!

Thanks Jamie, it was delicious to eat, although I knew I’d overeaten later, slowing me up, but a most unexpected fast restored normality the next day!

You can't detour a de rigeur!!
Made me hungrier, Neville! and I'm guessing it would be clotted cream first on your scones?!

Thanks Verity. As for the clotted cream, with part of my heart perpetually in Devon, I should have gone the jam first route, but our preference is (dare I say it?) for cream first. There being copious amounts of clotted cream, I ducked the issue, and nodded to my loyalties by having a cream and jam sandwich, with more cream on top! This cat certainly got the cream!😋
Verity, you sound like you know a bit about the inter-county cream tea rivalry over here on our strange little island. Have you visited our Southwest?

Thanks for sharing, Neville (even I would have bordered Cornwall and Devon). Yes, as a dream walker and food lover!! (not in person)
