How I loved the summer
(A favourite of mine)
With our clocks all sprung forward
To British Summer Time.
Oh I love the summer
The warmth and the light
And dining alfresco
Right into the night.
The blossom of springtime
Hailed summer’s advent
As buds in succession
They came and they went.
Leaves of all manner
Green, red, yellow hues
Provided us sunshade
Whenever we’d choose.
And as summer is ending
Getting ready for bed
Comes autumn’s kaleidoscope
Of browns, yellows and red.
But then we fall backward
October has been
Dark days are now signalled
Greenwich Time is Mean!

Very nice poem. But I love winter myself. Although, the older I get the more my bones ache during winter, so I may only have a few more winters left that I enjoy before my bones start aching so bad I come to hate it!

Thanks Christopher. I don’t mind winter, but it’s the dark afternoons that depress me, so I hate it when the clocks go back to GMT at the end of October.

Enjoyed the poem Neville, and feel the same way about the dark afternoons at this time of year. Thinking of two Albert Camus quotes. 'Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower' and 'In the depths of winter I found within myself an invincible summer.'

Thanks Jamie and thanks for those two fascinating Camus quotes of which I was not aware. On the subject of Camus, my wife’s French group have recently finished reading his L’Étranger. Goodness me it’s bleak, wrist-slitting stuff! (But I have enjoyed reading Paul Verlaine’s iconic autumnal poem recently myself)
