Dada-dada-dada! the sound pierced into the quiet Sunday morning in our peaceful little village. “I wonder what’s the hurry?” she said as we thought about getting out of bed. “Probably a police car racing between the two motorways,” I suggested, “Maybe an accident?”
Rather than getting up, we debated whether our village was a rat run and what larger roads, avoiding pretty, sleepy villages might be better bets.
Then there on Facebook was the picture. Muntjac with head stuck in railings on the Poohsticks bridge over our tiny Mimram.
I love Muntjac... fillet baked for six minutes. Delicious!

These tiny members of the deer family are about the size of medium-sized dogs and look a bit like them. They come from China. Some s.o.b. kept them as pets and they escaped. Now there are millions of them roaming the countryside, creating havoc, particularly at night. On the plus side, they are probably the tastiest members of the deer family. I have them whenever there’s a cull!

That's how our deer are in the southern USA. People say it's barbaric to hunt them but we would literally be overrun with them if they didn't have deer hunting season every year. They cause countless car accidents by running across the roads. My sister hit one just last year.

If yours are anything like the muntjacs, they’ll taste terrific. We have lots of roe and fallow deer running wild in the area we’re in. There was a funny tale about one such the day after Christmas quite a few years ago. I may have drabbled it, but hey, maybe I’ll drabble it again!

Might as well!
I haven't eaten deer in probably thirty-five years, after I stopped going hunting with my dad.

Deer is wonderful, very little fat in it, and muntjac is the best imho.

Just googled Muntjacs and they remind me of Grey Duikers for which I've a bit of a soft spot seeing images of many when participating online in wildlife related citizen science projects focused on African Habitats .

Out of interest Christopher--) A Colorado based initiative on the same site, the Colorado Corridors Project, stands if I have this right to make incidents such as the one your sister experienced, less likely by building a system of overpasses and underpasses which wildlife can use..

It's all on the 'Zooniverse' site.

Which is a lot of fun to browse and a potential source of drabble inspiration to boot. -)
