Hear no, speak no, see no
In the ‘Venus of Urbino’
Some say it’s rather rude
That tantalising nude.

On a chaise-longue does she lie
And looks you in the eye
Seductive though I doubt
As maids are thereabout.

A dog is curled up too
By her feet, so I put to you
Although it’s quite hypnotic
It’s really not erotic.

Art historians debate
From the Uffizi to the Tate
If she’s playing with down below.
But me I think not so...

Her left hand casually
Simply there for modesty...
(But I bet that’s not what Titian
Was wishin’!)

I’ve decided to go highbrow... with lowbrow connections (as they might (not) have said in BBC’s ‘Twenty Questions’)

Thank you very much Drew. That is high praise indeed. I wasn’t aware that you had such knowledge of the picture, which I think Mary Beard discussed in a programme just before Christmas. I didn’t watch it because I was cooking at the time, but having been taken to the lovely Urbino on one of my foreign trips, I did some research... and it seemed rather drabbleable!

...and the last two lines were a force-fit (because of the unforgiving wordcount) but simply HAD to included the artist’s name!
