Paolo was irritated by the way Livia had dismissed him as 'boy', just as Mary had earlier. He was irritated that she'd distanced herself romantically from him with a wave of her hand. And he was irritated that she didn't remotely seem to care about any other sexual exploits he'd been or might be engaged in. But Paolo loved Livia... truly, madly, deeply.
For her part, Livia was keen to get down to business, her business. The businesslike tone she adopted verged on the brusque.
"Now Mary... I'd like to engage the services of your brother Donal to bury Terry."

I didn't know Paolo had it that bad for Livia. Have you mentioned before that he was that in love with her? I can't recall.

Yes, it’s been a rather big part of all his interactions with her. He’s utterly bewitched by her. She’s really beautiful, but really ruthless too.

I knew he was really infatuated with her, but I didn't remember him being so in love with her. Of course, my memory is getting rather faulty.

I haven’t explained it in the story, but her ‘distance’ might be part of what’s fuelling his desire. The unattainable... although that’s not necessarily a male trait. (and saying that probably isn’t pc!)
