I was hugged yesterday, twice. I wasn’t comfortable about it because, beyond my wife and grandchildren, I’m not a hugger. But my next door neighbour clearly is.
I gave him two bikes, which he said would be perfect for his children. We had stopped cycling as it had become very dangerous on our narrow country roads. The bikes were taking up space; they had to go.
Admittedly, his wife recently ran away with another man, leaving two children. Maybe my apparent kindness was the catalyst to my uncomfortable hugging, but maybe it was the fact that he was completely pissed.

That was a very nice gesture, the bike-giving, I mean. The hugging I could do without, though! I'd settle for a handshake!

Yeah, me too... handshakes are cool and not embarrassing😕 We didn’t need the bikes and he and his two kinds were going through a really tough time, including financially. His son christened his today and loves it, so that makes us both feel really great and that can’t easily be bought.

True.

It was doubly embarrassing because he was in tears too. He must be going through sheer hell. What I don’t get is how she could abandon her kids, but maybe that’s me being a bit too simplistic.

I don't understand that, either. It's bad enough to run off and leave your husband but a woman that abandons her kids is just scum.
