It was a rerun of a live performance from the Royal Opera House, but video technology failed halfway through. Normal service was eventually restored so we missed nothing.
I don’t want to be picky, but only three characters really counted; a goodie, an arch-baddie and a diva. The baddie was the real deal as the baritone camped it up pantomimically.
The action?
Baddie captures goodie, tortures him then tries to shag goodie’s diva lover. Diva stabs baddie to death. Goodie gets shot dead. Diva takes a dive, or is it diva, off the castle ramparts. Nice music.
The end.

Nice review! Keeps me from having to sit through it (I hate opera!). Went to a ballet as a teenager and I have to say, even though I haven't gone since then, I enjoyed it. But opera I can't get into.

Thanks Christopher. I think it depends on the opera for me. Tosca is not really for me, but Puccini’s La Boheme which we saw last autumn was divine. The Marriage of Figaro and The Bartered Bride are perfect for the non-opera lover as they both have action, a silly but fun yarn and every single song is a winner. As for the ballet, that’s our real love. We’ve been to too many great performances to list...
