On our route by water to South Pool, the boathouse sits at water's edge, separated by a winding path from the big house, but sufficiently distant for the cries of a victim to be taken for one of the sounds of the night. Far enough for the sound to be muffled, particularly when the victim's mouth was roughly covered by his assailant's hand, shortly before the knife slid between his shoulder blades to pierce his rapidly beating heart. Oh yes, what a great place to commit murder, provided nobody spotted you on the path to the boathouse.
But we did.

Very good drabble, although I'm ashamed to admit I've never read anything by Ms. Christie.

Thanks, Christopher. Agatha Christie is almost a generic for thrillers/murder mystery yarns. Always good and satisfying at the end reveal (a la Columbo). She specialised in creepy period mansions in the south west and if you could see the boathouse and the big house, you might understand why we thought it might be a natural for Ms Christie...who herself died in very mysterious circumstances not that many miles away. Worth a read (or a movie-watch)!
