Father Mordrin was one of the fairest priests you could meet. Living in 12th/13th century Hertfordshire, he was renowned for settling disputes among his flock. He never took sides but always heard both sides. He represented the Age of Even-handedness.
Bad King John heard of this fame and sent his men to cut off Mordrin’s right hand. Unperturbed, Mordrin cut off his own left hand, to even things up. A saintly but futile gesture, since John’s men then cut off his head.
The Pope thought 'St Mordrin' sounded crap, so the martyr became St. Even Age. How very odd!
