Thumb out, hitching from the North to London to see my cool mates when a vintage Rolls Royce pulled up. An old man beckoned me to hop in - was London bound. Yippee!
"Fabulous car!" (Couldn't believe my luck.)
"Do you drive?" He asked.
I nodded.
"I mean have you got a licence?
"Yes!"
"Well can you drive the rest of the way? I've driven from Scotland and I'm very tired"
I drove the magnificent machine to London. He said I'd only need 2nd gear.
'No way!' I thought, as I went through the whole box.
But he never knew.... zzzzzzzzzzzz!

It was such a treat. I was a young, impecunious chap at university then. I think he was trying to be helpful in saying keep in second gear, but given that opportunity I was definitely going to use the whole gearbox. Thanks for your lovely comment.
