No one knew exactly when the change happened or what caused it, but those who survived counted their blessings and prayed that they wouldn't be next.

Initially, no one paid much attention because only a minuscule few actually disappeared; hardly enough for anyone to take much notice. But then things took a sinister turn. More people were disappearing in greater numbers and with increasing frequency.

It was initially believed that only the people on the bottom of the food chain were susceptible, but the beast didn't make distinctions. All were fair fodder.

The next round of lay-offs was coming.

    Thanks, everyone. Unfortunately, it just happened where I work and my supervisor was proofed. I had flashbacks.
