Severe looks aside Irma in reality was a cleaner, an Italian mama, who gently ushered us off the train into the emerging bustle of the city. We didn’t hang around. Cities are expensive.
Next stop Bologna via a bright red Alfa Romeo Guilietta driven with élan by a racy version of Alberto Ascari. Much preferable to a Bedford Dormobile now miles behind as we ate up the autostrade, before coming down to earth with a hitch in a tiny Fiat 500. Beggars can’t be choosers. Dropping from over 100 to a slow-motion 50mph gave our nerves a deserving rest....
