Le Pétomane’s pièce de résistance was La Marseillaise but let’s not forget his great German rival the bumptious Thomas Furzwahnsinniger who, echoing the flugelhorn, emitted a deep soft and warm sound through his lederhosen to much Teutonic acclaim.
At the Vienna World Championships in 1913, Franco-German tensions were tested as Thomas opened brazenly with Deutschland Uber Alles. Next, anticipating the French National Anthem, the audience was stunned instead by a 100 minute rendering of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No3 in deference to the host’s beloved composer. The Jury stuffed with Austrians unflinchingly handed the crown to the crafty Le Pétomane.
