Calais' hidden charms for the alternative tourist are best experienced on a bicycle. Cycle off the ramp of a ferry among juggernauts and SUVs towards the freedom of the quiet canalside road to Guines. Pop into the makeshift bar for a genièvre at the back of the secondhand clothes shop. While away an hour playing javelots (large brass underarm darts) in an ally behind some bar or at the fort. Devour a whacking great sole, fresh from La Manche for lunch. And when said and done don't forget to pay homage to the Burghers (no NOT MacDonald's) before sailing home.
