“It’s my turn today,” shouted the apple as John went to the fruit bowl.
“I think you’ll find it’s mine,” said the banana.
“Don’t forget me,” said the pear.

John was shocked to find there was such clamour for his attention. He was an apple-a-day kind of guy. They were more consistent and trustworthy. He liked a hard pear but when they became soft the juice from the bite dribbled down his shirt. Bananas have to be just right but he could make a tasty loaf with soft ones.

He rearranged the fruit and took out the apple.
