After John began storytelling he was encouraged to write his own stories which he self published. The books were successful locally but did not gain national recognition.

On returning to writing he read an interview with a highly successful author. She said that ideas were generated in a lake for her to develop in a shed. She always kept a notebook to jot down new ideas as they popped up but it was the sheer intensity of her research and development and the detailed planning sheets for her characters that made John realise he would never be J B Mackinney.
