Martin, the local bank manager, had a secret. He was a football hooligan. All over England he’d caused trouble but was never caught. Because he had a French O level he was chosen to lead the assault on Lyon.
At the end of the game the jubilant fans found their way out blocked by three rows of impassive gendarmes. He led from the front insulting the French about their efforts during the war. Louder and nearer they went until they were toe to toe. Without warning the gendarmes opened up, snatched Martin and took him away. The gates stayed closed.

True story? You’ve clearly got some interesting acquaintances, Brian, oui?

I was on the edge but it was so funny when it happened. The conclusion was true. The character was inspired by the fact that many of the leaders of the 80s football gangs had professional jobs.
