Every year the blackbirds nested in John’s garden. The magpies always came to destroy. This year the blackbirds used the most closely knit bush and settled in. The magpies were out of sight. All was well until the chicks were ready to fledge.

There was such a commotion when the magpies arrived. The blackbirds fought to protect the nest but were brushed aside. The magpie came out. The blackbirds stood guard on the fence. A squirrel scuttled by but turned and ran off. A rook dropped down into the hedge and struggled to climb out.

The blackbirds are singing triumphantly now.

Smart and evil, like tuxedoed villains... with hellish voices. I don’t like magpies, but there are so many of them around right now. Bravo to the blackbirds... which I love!
