On the last round of the village Summer Whist Drive young Jim partnered Gladys who stared at him with a grim face and tight bun. Early in the game, with spades as trumps, the lead played a diamond. Not having one Jim played the two of spades, but to his horror the next player played the three, leaving Gladys to play a diamond and losing the trick. She was mortified as she also lost the star prize.

With thinly disguised anger she offered Jim the painful words of wisdom: “Never send a little boy out to do a man’s job.”
