"A joke", Ernest had lectured him with great gesture, "needs a certain structure to be funny".

Today Jack entered the chaotic realms of Ernest's garage. Right in the middle there was a kind of machine, consisting of various valves, tubes, steam boilers.

Somewhere in the depths of the room he heard his friend, rummaging through the stacks of parts and materials.
Finally he appeared, strode around the metal monstrosity and smiled.
"Know what this is?", he asked, turning towards Jack.

"It's a joke, right?", the young man gasped.

"Correct", Ernest chuckled, beaming at him.

"And doubtlessly one of my best."

Something sinister suggested here, can only guess at 'the thing,'
    Well done!

    Nothing sinister, really.
Just the weird understanding of a person of "structurism" in each and every thing.

It's partly authentic, as I have encountered a person who wanted to become a "gag author".
Unfortunately none of his texts has really been funny, which made him bitter and later on a "guru" of "funny structures" (that don't work).

"the thing" was the "structure of a joke", Ernest had tried to put into shape. ;o)

I want to know what it is. The story made me curious, and hopeful that I will never know.

Someone is always hurt by the creation of a joke, it's never funny to them.
The ridiculousness of humour, punctuated by the haphazard lab
The idea of a joke being a Frankenstein of ideas, rarely perfect.

    and that's just two reads

    Thanks, Jim.
As I said it's partly based on the encounter with a person who believed he could _construct_ great jokes. - which didn't work at all.

    Dear Lorna,
it's nothing sinister. Just Ernest, taking the uncomprehending gasp of his friend for perception. ;o)
