Interesting jobs #3

by

I turned back from this idyllic scene and got into the driver’s seat.

“Get me home, Richard, I’m knackered.” Was Fred’s request as I started the engine.

It was before speed limits on motorways. We were going up the three lane M6. Need I say more?

I reached 130mph very quickly and stuck there all the way to Altrincham.

I dropped Fred off and walked round to my digs.

Next morning I was in work again. Fred thanked me for driving and added “I hope you realise that you managed a fuel consumption of 7 miles per gallon coming home!”

Didn’t they have speed limits on the early motorways? At 130mph I’d have been crapping myself... even driving an XK150😱

No, and it wasn’t only on motorways. The derestriction sign applied to all roads then. It was entirely up to you how fast you drove …. On this occasion I was used to being driven fast in the XK150 and it was not the first time I had driven it. I remember a race we had in it with another Jag on the Ashford bypass … but that is another story … see ‘Interesting jobs #4. … yet to be written.
