France #15

by

The hotel was just down the road, on the right.

“Do they speak English?” She asked.

“Not a lot, but that’s OK, I speak fluent French with either a Normandy or a Paris accent. Do we want dinner?” I said as we went in.

“Why not?” She replied, “I’ll pay.”

The receptionist smiled, “ Bonjour Monsieur, Madame.”

“Bonjour,” I replied, “Reechar Oont”. That’s how my name is pronounced in Northern France.

“Bonjour, Monsieur. Votre chamber est pret.”

“Bon, est que vous ave une chambre en plus, pour ma colleague?”

“Le lit dans votre chambre est assez grand pour deux “

I don’t see ‘True series told as fiction’ as a label, Monsieur Oort, so I’m guessing this is fiction....🤔

No, I put this in the category of General/Misc if you look. And I too had the problem with the spelling of Oont, the spellchecker wants to change it. I worked a good deal of my time for 15 years in France, some days I think first in French and have to translate to English.

My chief aids in learning French were Patrick St Martin, whom I worked with, and who taught me French, but with a Normandy accent - he came from there. And a taxi driver, driving me round the Paris peripherique, who told me (in French) “You speak French very well, but with the accent of Normandy.”

I had an odd reaction when I taught in Montpellier and a waiter in a restaurant in Sète asked me if I came from north France. Close, but I was rather flattered. I was equally flattered at the Louvre, when I asked the receptionist where I could get a gallery guide. She pointed towards some leaflet racks, but when went for the English language one, she quickly pointed to the one in French, saying words to the effect of “Non, non, non... celui la est en anglais. Ceci... francais! I was well chuffed! (I still took the English one!😁)

A bit late in the conversation but everytime I go back to France, which unfortunately is not enough, I am told I speak very good French with a hint of English accent. Mon accent Limousin is gone then, I guess... worse, my kids speak French like English natives.. oh well 😂

Even anglicised, I am sure votre accent français est charmant, Frenchie !
(We English don’t like to admit this to our Gallic neighbours, but many of us love France, the French, the language and the culture! But don’t tell anyone I said so!🤫...)
