Gridles hole revisited

The visitor had come down from the hole, thinking. He walked to the village and went into the shop - still open, even though it was late. The man behind the counter looked at him.

“You look as though you have seen a ghost!”

“ I think I have, I went up to Gridles Hole and all sorts of things went through my mind. Not pleasant things.”

“Aye, that’s what happens to people up there. Some never come back. They jump in I suppose.”

“Deep is it?”

“Unfathomable. Throw a rock in and you can’t even hear it hit the bottom.”
