Norwich Cathedral then had the biggest organ pipes in England, after the re-build following the fire of 1939. These massive pipes lay above the south side of the nave.

Dickie Statham, Master of Music, made the most use of them that day. After the sounding of the Last Post, the organ thundered into the hymn ‘Oh God Our Help’

The nave exploded with music and we sang, sniffing back our tears.

The service ended and the Princess came round and thanked us.

It was a thoroughly moving event and one which I would not have missed for the World.
