8th May 1953. Armistice Day. I am a senior Chorister in Norwich Cathedral Choir. A special day because we are also commemorating Edith Cavell, executed by the Germans in 1915.

Princess Margaret is here.

We, the Choir, are on the steps inside the Great West door, the great length of the Nave to enhance our voices. Many of us have PTSD, but we don’t talk about it.

Four trumpeters in the organ loft, standing up there facing us.

We reach the commemoration and the trumpeters play The Last Post.

I and many others cry.

We all know what it means.

That’s very moving, Richard; thanks for sharing. I was clearly very lucky to have been unaware of how difficult it must have been for so many.
