I had been measuring atmospheric carbon dioxide levels for some years and noticed an inexorable increase when, on a flight from Stansted to Shannon, I mentioned it to Jim (Lovelock).

“Well, an ice age is due, just look at the sky.” He said. “I have bought a cottage here in Southern Ireland, well south of where the ice sheet got to last time.”

“But that’s the wrong way round.” I said, “increased CO2 means Global warming, not cooling.” I said.

We discussed it at length and the concept of Gaia was born.

The planet will defend itself against all excesses.

We flew from the old Stansted airport, the one with the wooden shed as the reception/check in/ baggage reception etc, not the modern monstrosity.
