Hopping the World #5

by

Since we were visiting Vatican City, I decided to wear my little (15mm diameter) Benemerenti replica badge.

I was amazed at the effect it had.

It opened doors which are not open to most people.

Swiss guards lowered their pikes in salute as we went into the Vatican gardens.

A Priest in the Sistine Chapel saw it and gave us a full tour, including showing us where it was best to look at Michelangelo's famous ceiling.

Such a small badge, I didn't even expect it to be seen, let alone recognised.

Only one person in England has ever recognised it

Sounds great! I’ll be sure to look out for it when I see you. I’m used to doors being slammed in my face.

I don’t usually wear it, Neville … except when I go to church (not a all right now due to the NHS having told me not to. I did wear it for Eleanor and William’s baptism, and it was the Priest there who recognised it and asked what it was awarded for … it entitles me to be called ‘Lord’ in the Catholic Church.

Wow! I’m related to aristocrissimo! I’m impressed.
