It's pouring outside. I imagine ringed rain ripples over on the pond currently under moonless and starless but not cloudless darkness in the middle of the common. A splash under the sodium light then more splashes as the rain intensifies around the island in the middle of the pond, relatively dry because of the trees. Will the pond be splashed all night? No but many weeks of pelting water will seem to pass in one night for what lives under the water and on top of the gravelly mound. Morning will seem a bright spring after nights' deep blue winter.
